What metrics are
A metric is a saved, named definition of a number your team tracks, such as monthly revenue or active subscribers. You define it once, and Qubit uses that definition wherever the number appears: on the Metrics page, on dashboards, in scheduled tasks, and in the Assistant's answers.
What a metric records
Each metric stores:
- What it measures: a business object, such as orders, and a calculation, such as the sum of a column or a count of rows.
- Which rows count, through optional filters.
- How it behaves over time: totals that add up over a period, such as revenue, or a latest value, such as active subscribers today.
- A reporting period (week, month, quarter, or year), or all time.
- A unit, a category, and an optional Arabic name and description.
Where metrics are defined
Metrics are defined in the semantic layer, next to the business objects and joins they are built on. The Metrics page in the sidebar is where you browse them, see their latest values, and put them to use. Create metric on that page opens the semantic layer.
Some metrics are saved directly against a table instead, such as metrics the Assistant creates from a chat. Metric definitions explains both kinds.
How values stay current
Qubit computes a metric's value after you save it, and again once a day. Every computed value is kept, so each metric builds a history that its card shows as a trend line. When a metric has a reporting period, its card also shows the change against the same span of the previous period.
Why one definition matters
When you change a definition, everything that reads the metric follows it. A dashboard card linked to a metric takes its query from the metric each time it loads, so it shows the new calculation. The Assistant is given your metric definitions when it answers questions and is instructed to reuse them instead of working the number out from raw columns.
Who can change metrics
Everyone in the workspace can browse metrics. Creating, editing, and deleting metrics need the workspace's update permission, which Owners and Admins have. If your workspace restricts data access, you only see metrics built on data you are allowed to read.
When your workspace reaches its plan's limit on metrics, Create metric is turned off. See Billing and subscription.
