What is the Data Catalog?

The Data Catalog is where you see and manage the data your workspace has given Qubit: connected sources, tables built from uploaded spreadsheets, and documents. Open it from Data Catalog in the sidebar.

The Assistant, dashboards, reports, and metrics work from the data that appears here. When you ask a question such as "What was our revenue last quarter?", the Assistant looks through the connected tables and the uploaded documents in this catalog to find what it needs.

What the catalog holds

The catalog is one list with three kinds of items. Use the filter above the list to show one kind at a time: All, Tables, Documents, or Databases.

  • Databases: connections to a database, data warehouse, or business app, such as PostgreSQL, Snowflake, Meta Ads, or Salla. Most of them copy data into Qubit on a schedule you choose. PostgreSQL, Supabase, MySQL, Redshift, and SAP HANA can also be queried directly without copying.
  • Tables: CSV and Excel files you uploaded. Each file, or each Excel sheet you select, becomes a table you can query.
  • Documents: PDF, Word (.docx), and plain text (.txt) files. Qubit reads and indexes them so the Assistant can search them and cite the page it used.

Next to the list, the Semantic model button opens the model Qubit builds over your connected data. See Semantic Layer.

Tables and documents work together

Connected data answers questions about numbers: sales, spend, orders, sessions. Documents answer questions about context: policies, definitions, contracts, and plans.

For example, if you connect your store and also upload a document that defines how your team counts an active customer, the Assistant can read that definition and apply it when it queries your orders.
