Writing effective prompts

The assistant understands everyday language, but clear questions get better answers with fewer follow-ups. Treat it like a new analyst on your team: it can write the queries, and it needs you to say exactly what you want to see.

What a good question includes

A clear question usually has three parts:

  1. The measure: what you want to count or add up.
  2. The breakdown: how you want it split, such as by region, product, or channel.
  3. The period and filters: which dates and which subset of the data.

A vague question

"How is marketing doing?"

The assistant has to guess what "doing well" means. It might show overall spend when you wanted conversions.

A clear question

"Show me the lead conversion rate by campaign for the last 30 days."

This names the measure, the breakdown, and the period, so the assistant can go straight to the right data.

More tips

Name the data source

If your workspace has several connections, say which one to use. Use the connection's name as it appears in the Data Catalog.

"Using the Salla connection, what were our five best-selling products yesterday?"

Ask for a chart type or a table

The assistant picks a chart that suits the data. If you want something specific, say so.

"Show sales by region as a pie chart." "List the top 10 customers in a table."

Build on the previous answer

You don't need to repeat the whole question to adjust it. The assistant remembers the conversation.

  • You: "Show me revenue by month for this year."
  • You: "Now break that down by product category."

Say how a number is calculated

If a term can mean more than one thing, spell it out the first time.

"Count a customer as active if they placed an order in the last 90 days."

When answers keep missing

If the assistant often gets a business term wrong, the fix usually belongs in your workspace setup:

  • Define the term as a metric so everyone gets the same calculation.
  • Add descriptions to the tables and columns it should use in the Data Catalog.
  • Add standing guidance in your agent instructions.
